Is the footage from a later version of the bar-kays after the plane crash? The early footage with otis redding they look more conservative.

Yes, this is after the plane crash. I have another clip with this song, which is before the plane crash.

Thanks so much for posting this classic clip ! This song was a big hit on 'Northern Soul' dance circuit here in the UK and I have never seen video footage before now. The bass and rhythm hook is just so strong. Not sure about the dance-moves though ;-)

Yes. What gives it away is the fact that it is harvey henderson who is playing sax in the video. He was a staple in the barkays lineup after the plane crash through the mercury years in the 70's and 80's. Harvey was not an original member of the band that backed otis redding.

I absolutely agree with you! And I wonder why no one ever questioned it. Huey Lewis sued Ray Parker Jr., but I think the Bar-Kays should have sued them both.

It's called a "Timbral Trill" (pronounced TOM-bral) or "same note trill" - it's done by trilling between one note and where it occurs elsewhere on the instrument, due to alternate fingerings. However, I do hear a change in pitch - he's trilling from a concert A down to a G sharp (I have perfect pitch), but it's SO fast that it is perceived as a one-note trill. It is possible on trumpet, french horn, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, and all saxophones, and some notes on flute.

The trumpeter is playing an f and an open g. He is slightly bending the notes by changing tightness and pressure in his lips. Al Hirt played a very good trill as well. Check out his version of Flight of the Bumble Bee (The Green Hornet Theme).
