The song is not about christ. The first verse is quite possibly about eve. The second verse is about pontious pilate, and his unfortunate subjection in history. This song is magnificently beautiful for the passionate benendiction of religion. God bless DM and Martin Gore for their amazing portrail of religion.

My God, I'm having some nostalgic. This brings back memories when I was a freshman in high school. In 1990, that's when I discovered, and started listening to depeche mode. My God, how years go so by fast. You don't hear too many good songs and bands like this anymore. Well as far in mainstream music, is just filled with nonsence, untalented crap, like emo. Its not the same when I was growing up in the 90's. 80's was cool as well.

I agree with kingdio420 here, except - the lyrics were written by Martin :) Otherwise yeah, the song speaks for itself and is purposefully left ambiguous like a lot of great lyrics.
Also, this is the uncut version of the video (see shot @ "morality would frown upon"), which is awesome.
