Princess Janelle is finally losing all her precious fur... she was getting so matted! All the knots are gone now though and she´s a MINIATURE LION! :D
The vet did this under sedation, but even so she *still* growled and twitched when we touched her paws...
She HATES being groomed to the point that I have to wear a protective glove because she bites, scratches and screams down the whole neighbourhood, and there are certain places I cannot comb her at all, like under her arms or on the inside of her legs, her tail or round her belly, because she struggles so much and pulls her legs up etc. I thought it was best for both of us to get her shaved so she doesn´t have to go through the "brush torture" every single day...

Well, I read about the problem you have with your cat and it seems to me that you don't know how to groom a persian cat properly.
I have a persian blue turtle at home and she is groomed every day. She doesn't like too much to be groomed, of course, like the majority of persian cats but it is not an impossible task. Like verything else in life, you need that special touch .....

how does that shaver go through all the fur so easily? I've tried to do it myself in the past. not a good idea. very hard. I now make appointments with the groomer.

don´t ask *me*, I don´t know how, and I wouldn´t even try! The groomer at the vets shaves her - it´s expensive because she needs sedation for it, but it gives both of us about 3-4 months of peace. :)

My vet refuses to sedate my cat for grooming. He said it should be reserved for emergency only. I don't know what to do, because my cat freaks out at the very sound of the clippers. I would love to have her cut like this. What are my alternatives? (I think U.S. vets are much more conservative about these things.)

BTW: I don't want to have Nik shaved as a 'fashion statement' either. I just want to save her (and myself) from all the furballs she hacks up. She has SO MUCH fur, just like yours, and she sheds terribly. It never LOOKS like she sheds, as her fur seems to grow faster than it sheds, but she's 14 years old now, and it's becoming even more of a problem. She DOES let me brush her, but even doing so twice a day doesn't fix the problem. (In a month's time, I can save nearly as much fur as you show)

I've had my Persian cat over 10 years and have NEVER had to shave him. You should take more care of your cat instead of shaving his fur off. Crap.

Please read the video info and then watch the other video of me giving just a short demo of trying to groom her (with a special rotating spoke long fur comb).
Just like us humans, EVERY cat is different. You obviously have one that tolerates or even loves being groomed and it´s not a "torture session" every day to him. To my Janelle it´s *torture*, she just does NOT like it. There you go.

i would definitely try another vet. unless your cat has a health problem (heart disease or something age related). a vet shouldn't have a problem sedating a cat for grooming. not grooming can cause all sorts of problems!
we sedate cats for grooming at the vet i work everyday. there are oral drugs that are safer than IV or gas, like valium. unfortunately, sedating a cat can get expensive. there is training you can try at home too. shoot me an email, if you want to chat. i'd be happy to help. :)

Thanks for all your info. It isn´t that expensive (42 Euros) to get her shaved including sedation, and it´s only every 6 months she really needs it. Re. training, if you are referring to giving her treats (she loves prawns) after every few seconds of grooming, I have tried that and she still goes ballistic, only a little bit less than without treats! The easiest way to get to her inside legs and under arms now that I have found, is to wrap her in a towel and comb out those parts...

It really is a shame because Janelle´s fur is soooo beautiful, but with her behaviour and hatred of grooming it just can´t be helped! And sadly, it´s too late to get her used to it now, i.e. she´s not a kitten anymore... :(
